Kvarken Archipelago
The famous part of the island is at the north end. Drive toward Björköby and you reach the Kvarken Archipelago, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
For a day, walk Bodvattnet runt, a 4 km loop, or the accessible kilometer that stops sooner. The loop passes Saltkaret bird tower, the Märraryggen outdoor grill, and Bodvattnet hut. There is free firewood and there are toilets. Blueberries and lingonberries grow in the forest in late summer. In summer you will not be alone.
The long walk is Björkö to Panike, 23 km. It needs two water crossings. The ferry at Korsbådafjärden is a new electric ferry and it is free. The timetable noted for the 2024 season was every day from 10.00 to 18.00 between 29 June and 15 August, then Saturdays and Sundays from 10 to 18 between 16 August and 30 September. Check the current year before you count on a crossing. At Rotörskatan the city does not run a ferry. The two recommended private boat taxis are Neptune Service and Ulf Rönnblad.
