Huts & outdoor grills
There are many free huts on the island. Most are for a day trip, not the night. One free cabin is meant for sleeping: Finnhamnen.
What the words mean
A laavu is a lean-to. It blocks the wind, you can sit in it, and people do sleep in them. There is usually an outdoor grill in front.
A cabin here is an open wilderness hut, an autiotupa. The state built them and they are free. No booking. The custom is that the last person to arrive may stay, and in practice it is flexible. A translator will sometimes call them “desert huts.” They are just cabins.
Villages and local groups also build huts and leave them open. An outdoor grill, a nuotiopaikka, is only the fire itself: a ring, often picnic benches, often free wood, sometimes an ax or a saw.
